Have you hopped on the sea moss train yet? Toot toot! Lots of folks have been buzzing about the benefits of the trendy seaweed vegetable, but what's the real deal?

My brother was nice enough to gift me with some rare purple sea moss that he brought back from Zanzibar, Tanzania, and I must say it's amazing. Check it out. He ships it throughout the U.S. The biggest thing I've noticed after taking it consistently for a few months is that it’s given me an overall energy boost. (I take it once every other day).

Here's 7 INTERESTING facts that I’ve learned about this magical moss:

  1. It contains 92 of the 102 minerals and vitamins that our bodies need to function daily. Incredible!

  2. There’s tons of benefits to ingesting sea moss, way too many to list! It’s packed with antioxidants, supports immune health, is good for gut bacteria, heart health, lowering blood pressure, regulating thyroid, increasing brain, mood and hormone balance, and is packed with iron.

  3. You may have heard about Irish sea moss, but did you know it’s also natively grown along the coasts of Africa, the Caribbean and Asia?

  4. There’s different colors and tastes. They all have unique benefits. Gold sea moss is common and has a minimal taste. Purple sea moss is more rare to find. It’s loaded with antioxidants, which makes it great for immunity, heart health and reducing inflammation. Green sea moss is rich in chlorophyll and works well as a natural deodorizer, is detoxifying, can heal the skin and reduce bacterial growth.

  5. Sea moss comes in raw, pill, gummy, powder, or gel form. I prefer gel. The gel lasts 2-5 weeks when refrigerated, depending on the source. Ask about the consumption date when you purchase.

  6. The best ways to use sea moss include adding 1 tablespoon to your smoothies, juices, tea, or using it as an egg substitute. You can also incorporate it into your beauty routine by making a sea moss face mask. Mix the moss with turmeric to brighten your skin, reduce inflammation, and even soothe eczema. All you’ve gotta do is: Scoop 2 tablespoons of sea moss into a small bowl. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric. Mix your blend. Apply to your sleepy mama, claiming her rest face. Let the mask sit on your face for 20 mins or so. (The longer the better for me). Relax in knowing that this mask is gonna feel skin tight on your face in seconds. Tighten things up baby! Love that feeling~a reminder that it’s working. Rinse & go be your best, absolute chill self. Visit us on Instagram to see this mask in action.

  7. Something to note: A little goes a long way. According to the NY Times, sea moss also contains lots of iodine, which can impact your thyroid if taken in abundance. It’s best to take 1-2 tablespoons at a time, every other day.
